Three critical part-time work rules South African F-1 students must know.
Why checking in with your DSO on arrival keeps your F-1 status active.
Studying in the US on an F-1 visa offers incredible academic and career opportunities, but American immigration regulations are unforgiving. Failing to follow strict employment guidelines or missing vital check-in windows can result in your SEVIS record terminating and immediate legal removal.
Your first priority on arrival is visiting your university’s international student office so your DSO can update your SEVIS status to active and issue your signed Form I-20.
International students are restricted to a maximum of 20 hours per week during school terms, expanding to 40 hours only during official university breaks.
Unauthorised off-campus employment is strictly prohibited. Internships and post-graduation work must be formally processed through CPT or OPT channels.
Your F-1 status depends on your SEVIS record staying active. Always confirm any work, internship or change of program with your DSO before acting, not after.
