There are few things that cause more panic than missing your scheduled US visa interview. Whether you got stuck in Joburg traffic, had a flight delay from Cape Town or Durban, or simply got the time wrong, waking up to realize you missed your consulate slot feels like a total nightmare.
Having spent 8 years in the US going through the F-1-to-OPT grind myself, I know how strict American bureaucracy can be. But if you’ve missed your interview, take a deep breath. You haven’t automatically destroyed your chances of studying or traveling, but you do need to handle your next steps carefully.
When you fail to show up for your appointment at the consulate, the official system marks your profile as a “No-Show.”
Don’t panic if you log into your scheduling account immediately and find yourself locked out. The US visa scheduling portal usually takes 24 to 48 hours to update and reset your account status after a missed appointment. Once the system logs that the date has passed, your profile will open back up and allow you to reschedule.
In most cases, no, you don’t lose your fee right away.
Your MRV payment receipt remains valid and linked to your profile, provided you haven’t exceeded the maximum number of allowed rescheduling attempts. However, if you have already rescheduled multiple times or if your payment receipt is approaching its 1-year expiration mark, the system may require you to pay a new MRV fee before booking a new date.
If you’re hoping the consulate will grant you an Emergency / Expedited Appointment to make up for the missed date, you need to understand their standards. The US Embassy only accepts major, verifiable emergencies—such as:
Oversleeping, missing a flight, or forgetting your printed DS-160 confirmation page will not qualify for an emergency override. You will simply have to wait for the system to reset and pick the next available regular slot.
Dealing with US visa portals, DS-160 errors, and interview bookings can be frustrating when you’re trying to do it all alone. Whether you need help navigating a missed interview, preparing for a mock interview, or auditing your documents before you head to the consulate, I’m here to help you get it right.
